PATROL DIVISION
D I V I S I ON
BUREAU
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division provides law enforcement services
for the 158 miles of federal and state expressways located in Milwaukee County, and 156
county parks and parkways. Milwaukee County is the only one of Wisconsin’s 72 counties
whose sheriff’s office is mandated by state statute –59.84(10)(b)– to serve as the primary
law and traffic enforcement agency on the freeway system. All other counties receive
such services from the Wisconsin State Patrol.
MCSO deputy sheriffs assigned to the Patrol Division are required to patrol previouslyreferenced thoroughfares – while also patrolling and policing the 156 Milwaukee County
parks, enforce traffic laws, assist motorists, respond to and investigate motor vehicle
accidents, collaborate with the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management and
other public safety agencies to manage and clear vehicle crash scenes, and assist local
police in criminal investigations and the apprehension of criminals.
In addition to traffic enforcement, MCSO’s Patrol Division conducts a significant amount
of urban policing, such as fatal and non-fatal shootings, suicides, and other criminal
investigations that occur or originate on the Milwaukee County freeway system and in
county parks. The Division also includes MCSO’s Motor(cycle) Unit, which assists with
traffic management and dignitary protection and escorts, and the Maritime Unit, which
patrols Lake Michigan waters from May to September, enforcing boating laws and
performing search and rescue operations.
MCSO spends approximately 79,000 hours patrolling the Milwaukee County freeway
system each year. In 2024, the agency’s Patrol Division conducted 2,572 arrests,
responded to 3,918 total crashes, conducted 20,440 traffic stops, and issued 25,392
